Getting to Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory

If you’ve used the Online & Print Journals list lately, you may have noticed that the links to Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory are requiring you to login to ulrichsweb.

This should not happen; there is no extra login that we can give you. There is a problem with the linking or authentication setup of one of our vendors. We are working to correct this.

Not to worry, though - this does not mean that you can’t access Ulrich’s. It just means that you’ll have to do it directly. Go to the Research Tools link on the blue bar at the top of every page. Under the heading for ‘Finding Periodical Articles’, there is a link to Ulrich’s. Once connected, do a search for the periodical title.

New Education Databases

CSE’s education students will find several new databases available on the Mahoney Library website:

  • Education Research Complete (1927+)
Indexes over 1,781 journals, with over 870 available full-text. Covers all levels of education, and all educational specialties.
  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (1938+)
Indexes over 2 million graduate works from institutions around the world, with over 900,000 available in full text (pdf download).
  • Professional Development Collection (1965+)
A collection of 520 education journals, nearly 350 of which are peer-reviewed and full-text. Also includes over 200 educational reports.
  • Collected Works of John Dewey (1882-1953)
This database is based on the 37-volume printed edition The Collected Works of John Dewey, 1882-1953, published by Southern Illinois University Press, 1967-1990 (edited by Jo Ann Boydston).

All are accessible via the Databases by Subject list (under the Education heading), or via the Databases A-Z list.

Online Research Help

CSE students (and staff) currently have two ways for getting online research assistance: Mahoney Online and Q and A NJ.

Mahoney Online is a newly instituted email reference service. Submit your question via an online form, and a CSE librarian will send you an answer via email. You will receive that response within 48 hours at the most, but usually quicker.

Q and A NJ is a state-sponsored live chat service that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Chat with a New Jersey-based librarian, and get some immediate help. (CSE librarians do not currently participate in this service.)

To access either of these services, click on the ‘Ask Online’ link on the library’s home page, or go directly to http://www.cse.edu/index.php?id=2256.

We will continue to investigate additional means of making library reference services more convenient and accessible to all our students, including off-campus and distance learners. Please post any suggestions that you have in the comments section below, or email them to mahoneyonline@cse.edu.

MS Office 2007 on library ‘lab’ computers

The campus is in the process of transitioning from older versions of MS Office to the latest release - MS Office 2007. The library’s ‘lab’ computers (those along the windows) were recently upgraded to the 2007 version.

The question that everyone is asking is ‘How do I print in the new Word?’
Office 2007 Screenshot
To print, click the icon in the upper left corner of the screen (shown above). This leads you to a menu with options to print and save.

One major change with the 2007 suite is the introduction of new file formats. Files created in the new version and saved in the new format are not compatible with the older editions of Office (not without downloading a compatibility pack).  The alternative, if you expect to be using different versions of Office, is to save the documents that you create in Word 2007 under the ‘Word 97-2003 Document’ format. This will ensure that you will be able to open them in an older version.
Note: MS Office 2007 is able to open files created in older versions.

To find familiar functions in Office 2007, consult Microsoft’s Interactive User Interface Guides, available for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Tutorials from Atomic Learning are available via Blackboard. For more information, see C-Net’s reviews and articles on the new office suite.
